With great brilliance, the Church celebrates today the Feast of Orthodoxy. This celebration was established to honor the Restoration of the Holy Icons after more than 100 years of persecution. The fanatical iconoclasts hatefully fought against the Orthodox clergy and laity who honored the sacred images.
Today, on this Sunday before the fast of Great Lent, we see the focus on the sad incident of Adam and Eve’s disobedience of God’s command, which resulted in the loss of the joys of Paradise (see Genesis chapter 3)
We are presented with a shocking scene in today’s Gospel, with the exhausted and humiliated Prodigal son falling to his Father’s feet. The son came knowing exactly what he would say to him: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am not worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants”
