The Gospel Reading for today describes the birth of the Holy Prophet and Baptist John, whom we are celebrating. Jesus had this to say: “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of woman there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11).
The invitation Our Lord offered His first four disciples to follow Him is of great interest. As we know from the Holy Gospels, Andrew, his brother Peter, James and John were disciples of John the Baptist.
